Ron, Sasha’s foster father, says her medical condition has stayed the same. He sent new photos of her and says she seems to have overcome her shyness of the camera. She is a beautiful German shepherd. Her medication hasn’t changed and that’s the good news we want to hear. Next month Sasha is due for her semi-annual summer hair cut. Her hair is so thick that he has her shaved down to her body. He also said right after she is clipped she looks like an Egyptian Pharaoh dog. Ron often worries about her happiness; he feels she gets embarrassed when she leaks and thinks that is why she spends so much time outdoors. Ron can’t let her up on the furniture – unlike the other dogs. She always lies at his feet in the evening when he is working at the computer or watching television. She plays ball with Ron and Jack (another foster dog) every day. And when Ron runs his daily errands, Sasha and Jack join him for the ride in the car.

Sasha enjoying the snow!

The latest news on Sasha is that there is no change in her medical condition. She hasn’t regressed, but she hasn’t improved either. While her foster father was away for a few days, Sasha, along with her companion dog “Big Red”, were staying at the outdoor kennel that has a heated room for them. They can come and go freely and come in out of the cold, rain or snow as they like. Sasha has a very healthy winter coat and loves the cold weather more than any of the other dogs at the farm. She usually spends several hours out each night in the fenced yard until coaxed with treats to come back into the house. She is very happy being outdoors.

We are happy to report that our dear Sasha was transported from St. Francis Animal Sanctuary to another animal rescue in North Carolina where a new foster home was waiting for her. From there, Sasha will be taken to the University of Tennessee Veterinarian School to try and resolve her incontinence problems. There they will do a urethra pressure test to try to determine if her urethra is functional, followed by a cystocscope to evaluate where the problem areas are. We will wait with baited breath for good news that they will be able to correct her condition. Susan at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary writes that Sasha is already missed terribly by the staff and herself (“she is such a fun-loving sweetie”!). We are hoping next month we will have great news about Sasha’s physical exams at the Veterinarian School.

Sasha is doing great. She loves her yard – she has a lot of room to run and play! We have been bringing her in on cold nights and she crate-trained in a snap! She loves all the walks and we’ve increased her playtime mates from one dog up to two at a time. She has found the joys of tug-of-war with her new canine pals!

We also believe her incontinence has improved significantly since coming to St. Francis Animal Sanctuary – no accidents in her crate at night! But she will be seeing a specialist to see if there’s anything else that can be done to help her.

We are happy to report that Sasha made the transition to her new home at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary without any problems. She settled in well and has adjusted to the routine at the sanctuary very quickly. Each day Sasha is taken out for playtime and walks and has been introduced to other dogs at the sanctuary under supervision. While Sasha is not yet 100% comfortable with male staff members, she is gaining trust and confidence each day. In addition, Sasha will soon be evaluated by a referred veterinary clinic to determine if her urinary issues can be resolved.

We have some wonderful news to share about Sasha. She was recently transferred to St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Mississippi where she will be cared for and loved for the rest of her life. As a long-term resident of the Animal League Sasha received plenty of love and attention from the staff, but she did experience some stress as a result of being in a shelter environment. Fortunately, friends at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary were able to bring Sasha to their facility. With a dog barn and acres upon acres of outdoor dog runs to enjoy, Sasha will have a wonderful, fulfilling life where she can receive care for her medical conditions and enjoy the great outdoors.

Sasha continues to have difficulty holding in her urine due to her life-long condition, but her foster mom is dedicated to making Sasha feel just like any other dog. She even has plans to make Sasha her very own room in her home so that she will not need to spend time in her crate at all. We have a feeling that Sasha will feel like the queen of her domain once she has a big room to call her own! Hopefully the other foster pets won’t get jealous. In addition, Sasha continues to improve with her destructive behavior and her foster mom plans on rewarding her this holiday season with some special treats in her stocking – hung from the fireplace with care.

Despite having 12 foster siblings to share her home with, Sasha has fit right in without any problems. She’s even managed to get herself into trouble with some of her puppy antics. You see Sasha has discovered the game of tug of war and she can’t get enough of it. Sasha and her foster sibling Missy, a friendly Boxer, love to play the game together. However, they sometimes find their adoptive mother’s clothing to play with, which usually ends with a pile of tattered threads. Sasha’s foster mom is working with her to teach her to play tug of war with her toys instead!
